For the fallen.(Emily Prince)

At first glance the work that lines most of the walls in the Saatchi Gallerys Project Room recalls a scientific diagram. It could almost be a depiction of a genome, with tiny flecks of colour representing genes strung out on lines reaching from ceiling to floor. But Emily Prince's installation does not depict a key to life: it is a representation of death. Those patches of colour are small portrait drawings of the American servicemen and women who have been killed on duty in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2004. There were 5, 213 when the project reached London: the artist carries on adding portraits and will continue to do so until American involvement in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts ends.

Miss Prince bases her drawings on the reports of casualties published on the website www.militarytimes. com. She copies a portrait if one is shown; if there is none, she leaves a blank space. Many of the drawings are annotated with comments on the dead that have appeared on the website. The drawings are on vellum, coloured to suggest the skin colour of the person portrayed. This element probably made more sense when the installation was in its original form, hung in the shape of a map of the USA, with the portraits pinned to the location of the dead man or woman's home. However, as installed at the Saatchi Gallery, with the portraits mounted in chronological order of death in the form of a grid, the vari-coloured portraits look like a patchwork quilt, recalling the quilts stitched in the 1980s and 1990s as memorials to people who died of MDS.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

In the UK the project has been compared with Steve McQueen's For Queen and Country, a result of his visit to Basra in 2003 as part of the Imperial War Museum's official war artists' programme. It is a large oak cabinet with 120 drawers containing facsimile stamps depicting UK servicemen and women killed in the war in Iraq. The project is, however, incomplete: Mr McQueen wants the designs to be issued as real stamps. For more information--and to sign the Art Fund's online petition urging the Post Office to accept the idea--go to www.artfund.org/queenandcountry

Mr McQueen says of Queen and Country that 'Once you put a human face on a situation, it makes it more real.' That touches on a deep issue concerning war memorials. Once comprehensive commemorations of war dead became widespread as a result of the unparalleled scale of the slaughter in World War I they were shaped by a strong belief that the dead should be treated identically, and, essentially, impersonally. Think, for example, of the hundreds of thousands of identical headstones in the war cemeteries.

The mere sight of those headstones - like the vast lists of names on such monuments as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC,--is affecting, but does their impersonality, as Mr McQueen implies, make the tragedy they represent less real--and, does that perhaps help to make war more acceptable?

The way we commemorate the war dead is being personalised by the internet. There are of course commemorative websites, but, more tellingly, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has an important web presence--thewall-usa.com--with information about the people whose names appear on the granite walls. Both Miss Prince and Mr McQueen seem to me to have used that need for personal commemoration to reinvigorate the concept of a war memorial. It is not only that both include portraits of the dead. They present those portraits in significant ways--Miss Prince in delicate drawings, informal and feminine in feel; Mr McQueen by using a type of image that is part of daily life. Although so different, both projects are very powerful, not least by leaving us to make up our own minds about the wars that they commemorate.

Sound of angry silence after the war of words.(Sport)

Byline: By Ian Parkes

The war of words that erupted between bitter McLaren rivals Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso has now degenerated into simmering silence. Following a flawless display to clinch a pole-to-flag victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton revealed the reigning world champion is no longer speaking to him. An uneasy relationship that has existed since a contentious Monaco Grand Prix at the end of May has now plummeted to an all-time low.

Alonso's deliberate act in impeding Hamilton during qualifying - and the feud that followed - has put an end to any camaraderie that still existed between the pair.

If team boss Ron Dennis is to reconcile the team-mates, it will be a severe test of his man-management skills.

For his part, Hamilton insists he does not hold grudges, leaving the ball in Alonso's court as to whether they will be on speaking terms again.

"My respect for Fernando remains the same," insisted Hamilton. "I think when you grow up and see someone who is as successful as you want to be, be it Fernando or Michael Schumacher, you have to respect them for what they have achieved.

"But since yesterday he doesn't seem to be speaking to me, so I don't know if he has a problem. I hope he still speaks to me. I'm easy to get on with. I don't hold grudges over anyone. But if he doesn't want to, then that's for him to decide.

"If I walk in and I see him then I will speak to him, but I am not going to go looking for him and make him feel better." The 22-year-old openly concedes to making a mistake in qualifying, and has since apologised for his actions.

Hamilton was supposed to have let Alonso by at the start of the final 15-minute session. But fearing he would compromise his own position, he opted against such action, despite repeated calls to do so by the team over the radio.

In the closing stages, Alonso was put on hold in the pits for 20 seconds by the team after taking on fresh rubber.

With Hamilton queueing behind him, he waited a further 10 seconds before exiting, the time proving enough to prevent Hamilton from setting out on a final hot lap.

A furious, four-letter exchange of views unfolded over the radio between Hamilton and Dennis after Alonso went on to clinch pole. But, following an investigation race stewards imposed a five-place grid penalty on Alonso, while also denying the team any points won from the race for the constructors' championship.

So, while Hamilton may talk of respect for Alonso, it appears the esteem in which he once held the Spaniard has been lowered, with an accusing finger pointed at the 26-year-old.

Asked for his explanation as to what unfolded after the incident, Hamilton replied, "They (the team) just asked me why I didn't do what they wanted me to and so I told them.

"I said, 'I made a mistake, I apologise. It won't happen again. But it has happened, let's forget about it and move on. We're both on the front row, so we can still smile.'

"I thought because of the argument I had with Ron over the radio, and he was obviously angry, he was perhaps teaching me a lesson, so I just took it on the chin.

"Ron wasn't very happy yesterday, but we have to be professional, so we sat down and we spoke about it," added Hamilton. "I told him my views, and he respected those, so we came to a mutual understanding and started with a clean state from today."

Alonso, starting from sixth on the grid, managed to finish fourth behind the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen and Nick Heidfeld in his BMW Sauber.

With Hamilton claiming the third victory of his rookie season, the gap to Alonso is now seven points, with Raikkonen 20 adrift and team-mate Felipe Massa a further point down after finishing 13th.: Pain in Spain over win:Not everyone was impressed by Lewis Hamilton's win. Spanish sports daily Marca made it clear that it felt that the Briton's path to victory had been cleared by the world governing body FIA's decision to relegate Hamilton's McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso to sixth on the grid from pole position.

The ruling was made late on Saturday night after Alonso's presence in the pit lane prevented Hamilton from getting in a final qualifying lap. "This way you can win anything!" was Marca's ironic headline on their internet site, www.marca.com below a photo of a celebrating Hamilton.: STANDINGS:Hungarian Grand Prix, Budapest: 1 L Hamilton (Gbr) McLaren 1hr 35mins 52.991secs, 2 K Raikkonen (Fin) Ferrari 1:35:53.706, 3 N Heidfeld (Ger) BMW Sauber 1:36:36.120, 4 F Alonso (Spa) McLaren, 5 R Kubica (Pol) BMW Sauber, 6 R Schumacher (Ger) Toyota, , 7 N Rosberg (Ger) Williams , 8 H Kovalainen (Fin) Renault. Gadget Adviser: In this chess game, you get to make the call.

Byline: Eric Gwinn

The new "Kasparov Chess" mobile game from Glu ($1.99-$3.99 monthly or $5.99-$7.99 one-time purchase) is available for most phones, except smartphones. You can play a five-minute blitz game or use the correspondence mode and send one move per day and play multiple games at the same time.

We corresponded by e-mail with chess master Garry Kasparov on the latest title to bear his name:

Q. When playing on a mobile phone, how do you concentrate on chess amid all the background noise?

A. To a chess player, the only environment that really matters is the one in your mind. If you can learn to control that and focus in a noisy chess club or playing in a park, or on the stage of a world championship match, you can do it while playing on a cell phone. Like anything new, it might take some getting used to.

Thanks to the popularity of chess software and chess on the Internet, there are already probably more people playing chess on computer screens than with the wooden boards and pieces I grew up with.

Q. What was your role in developing this game?

A. I traveled to California twice to meet with their designers and we had several feedback sessions. Then they would send me the latest version and a friend and I would play with it for a while and I'd send back my thoughts.

Q. Against a human opponent, you can read the eyes and body language to determine if he's aggressive or defensive, so you know if he's setting up an attack or a bluff. There are no such signs against a computer opponent. What other human-versus-human elements are missing from a human-versus-cell phone chess matchup?

A. Of course the psychological element is missing, but I have a lot of experience against computer opponents, and there is still specific preparation you can do. (Computers) have distinct personalities, too, with strengths and weaknesses. What's missing in general is the sense of competition, the excitement of matching wits against another person.

I think anyone would agree that it's totally different winning or losing against another human. Your competitive fires get burning. Plus, there's the social element. Chess can really be an international language.

Q. Which is your preference: To play as white or to play as black?

A. Every chess player knows it's an advantage to be white, so that would always be my preference. But if you want to improve it's best to be balanced and play an equal number of games with black and white.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox Announces Conviction of Grand Rapids-Area Habitual Child Sex Offender.

LANSING, Mich., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Attorney General Mike Cox today announced the third conviction of habitual sexual predator, Timothy Rosell Westbrook, who was found guilty by an Oakland County jury for using the Internet to commit child sexual abuse.

"Today justice has been done. This conviction highlights just how dangerous child sexual predators are and how important it is to get them off the street," said Cox. "Since 2003, my office has charged more than 80 sexual predators and pornographers who were looking to harm our children. We will continue to hunt these criminals down and prosecute them to keep Michigan's children safe."

Attorney General investigators arrested Belding resident Timothy Rosell Westbrook, 47, in Novi October 20, 2005. Between January 10, 2005 and October 20, 2005, Westbrook used the Internet to contact what he believed was a 14- year old girl to arrange a sexual encounter. Westbrook traveled from Belding to Novi to meet the online persona and was arrested. In Novi's 52-1 Judicial Court, Westbrook was found guilty of two counts of Child Sexually Abusive Activity, and two counts of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime, both 20-year felonies. He was sentenced to 8-40 years in prison as a habitual 3rd offender and must pay a $60 Crime Victims' Rights fee, $240 in state costs and must provide a DNA sample for the national registry as well as register as a Sexual Offender.

Westbrook was charged as a Habitual Offender due to convictions in 1989 and 1992 of Criminal Sexual Conduct 2nd Degree with a person under 13 years of age. He was sentenced to 7-15 years in prison for the 1992 conviction out of Kent County and was discharged in 2000.

Since 2003, Cox's Child and Public Protection Unit has arrested 80 Internet child sexual predators and pornographers. Attorney General Cox encourages parents to visit http://www.michigan.gov/ag for tips on safe Internet usage for children. Citizens can also report suspected Internet child predators via the Report Internet Abuses Against Children link, or by calling the Child and Public Protection Unit at (313) 456-0180.
