JewelMint, Send the Trend and ShoeDazzle follow a similar recipe: for a monthly fee, shoppers take a style quiz, and each month, the site proposes a handful of items.
When Emily McNish shopped for jewelry online, she was overwhelmed by the options while searching for "gold necklace" on e-commerce sites or Google. Then she found a Web site called JewelMint that she lets shop for her.
JewelMint determined that Ms. McNish, 24, a university admissions counselor in Los Angeles, has "boho" style and likes big chunky jewelry. So on the first day of each month it offers her pieces that match her style. She has five days to pick a necklace, bracelet or ring.
She pays $29.95 a month for that service. "It's sort of like being part of a secret club," Ms. McNish said.
JewelMint is one of a new breed of e-commerce sites, which also include Send the Trend, ShoeDazzle, JustFabulous, Sole Society and the upcoming StyleMint, combining old-fashioned and newfangled methods for luring customers. They present users with a limited selection of jewelry, shoes and accessories by coupling software algorithms that determine personal style with strategies culled from home-shopping TV channels and CD-of-the-month clubs.
The sites are the latest example of retailers inventing new ways to shop online. The recent flurry of innovation in e-commerce has also produced private sale sites like Gilt and daily deal sites like Groupon. Like those, these shopping clubs try to filter the seemingly infinite options online and show a small selection, tailored to an individual's taste.
JewelMint, Send the Trend and ShoeDazzle follow a similar recipe: a fashion celebrity designs or picks the styles (or just attaches his or her name to the project). Shoppers take a style quiz, confiding their go-to nail polish shades and whether they most covet the wardrobe of Nicole Richie or Reese Witherspoon. Each month, the site selects a handful of items and the shopper buys one for a set fee, skips the month, or forgets about it and gets charged that month's fee, which can be applied to purchases over the next year.
"When you type in anything to search on the Internet, it's almost terrifying the tidal wave of information you get back," said Kate Bosworth, an actress who is the face of JewelMint and one of its designers. "The idea of harnessing search for different, sought- after things on the Internet is really the new frontier."
Investors seem to agree. Send the Trend planned to announce Monday that it had raised $3 million from Battery Ventures and angel investors. ShoeDazzle, the first of these sites, has raised $20 million. BeachMint, the site behind JewelMint that plans to start others like StyleMint, which will sell T-shirts designed by Mary- Kate and Ashley Olsen, has raised $15 million.
"The first generation of e-commerce was about taking care of your chores -- that's Amazon," said Jeremy Liew, managing director at Lightspeed Venture Partners, an investor in ShoeDazzle. "That's not what gets people excited in the real world about shopping. This is about making shopping fun again."
The idea of applying a software algorithm to determine something as unique as someone's personal style might seem anathema to dyed- in-the-wool fashion lovers.
The sites say they can do it because they learn enough from the style quizzes people fill out and their activity on the sites, like whether they view or buy certain items or mark them as favorites.
After a three-minute style quiz on ShoeDazzle that asks whether a shopper prefers Stella McCartney or Giorgio Armani and pumps or strappy sandals, the site proclaims, "If you were a shoe you'd be a calf-height embroidered-suede peep-toe bootie with a fringed cuff." According to ShoeDazzle, that means she would like to buy steel- gray pumps with 4.5-inch heels or brown platform wedges with turquoise straps.
Google, which applies algorithms to nearly everything, is borrowing a similar concept for its high-fashion e-commerce site, Boutiques.com. Users take a style quiz and, based on the results and a shopper's activity on the site, Google shows items they might like, including selections chosen by celebrities.
But the new shopping clubs add another element: monthly subscriptions. That gives them an excuse to send shoppers e-mail messages and pressure them to make a shopping decision on deadline, as Gilt and Groupon do.
The strategy eliminates much of the business risk of ordering inventory, said BeachMint's founders, Josh Berman and Diego Berdakin, because customers are urged to make a purchase each month and the companies learn to predict which items shoppers will buy.
Selling directly to consumers eliminates expenses too, the companies say. They generally design the items or hire designers, find manufacturers to produce them and ship items themselves.
"Getting a piece of jewelry at Macy's or Nordstrom, it keeps getting marked up all the way down from the manufacturer to the licensee," Mr. Berman said. "We go right to the consumer."
The items on the sites range from $30 to $50 a month. The retailers compare themselves to stores like H&M and Forever 21 -- trendy and affordable, if not the highest quality.
They do, however, have the added cachet of celebrity. In the case of JewelMint, Ms. Bosworth and her stylist Cher Coulter design the jewelry. Kim Kardashian, the reality star, is co-founder and chief fashion stylist of ShoeDazzle and its sky-high heels look like those she teeters on in paparazzi photos. Christian Siriano, the designer and "Project Runway" winner, picks items for Send the Trend , and he designs a few himself.
"People look at certain celebrities as style icons," said Divya Gugnani, chief executive and co-founder of Send the Trend, "and they trust their ability to say this is hot, this is cool, this is fun."

NSW:Gillard condemns Nigeria attack
Federal deputy opposition leader JULIE BISHOP has joined the prime minister in condemning
the attack on a United Nations building in Nigeria.
The blast in Abuja killed at least 18 people, blowing out much of the building and
marking a sharp escalation in a wave of attacks.
Ms BISHOP has described the attack as brutal and cowardly, calling it an attack on
the future of Nigeria as much as it is an attack on the United Nations.
She says it's more evidence that the struggle against terrorism must remain a high
priority for nations around the world.
Earlier Prime Minister Julia Gillard called it an attack on us all and offered Australia's
condolences to the victims and the UN.

Oppressors, be warned!
Byline: J.D. Lovrenciear
Edition: Main/Lifestyle

ON Feb 11, the world witnessed yet another monumental milestone. There are lessons to be learned - both for the meek and oppressed as well as their haughty oppressors and arrogantly blind leaders.
Lesson one: the world has changed. The Egyptians' social media revolution is only the markings of a new beginning, not the end. Leaders around the world are waking up to a reality never imagined before.
Lesson two: Genghis Khan and the emperors of China invested in brute force by increasing their military headcount. They failed eventually in the face of brutalised human souls who rose against them.
The experience of the West or the East is the same. When the yoke on the subjects snaps, all hell breaks loose. In today's world, military or police pressure and barricading will not be able to counter the fathomless power of the Internet.
Lesson three: the peasants of the past eras are today's new- generation youth who want to see the birth of a new renaissance. They dream of creating a true democracy that respects individuality.
They hope of giving back to humanity what has rightfully belonged to society. And their weapon is the World Wide Web, the invisible laser that is purely driven by human will. And history tells us that no single human being has succeeded in smashing this God-given gift to all mankind called "will".
Lesson four: when leaders begin to be preoccupied with threatening their citizenry with warnings to squash any idea of rising against regimes, oppression or hardship, it clearly signals that the new-age battle against corruption, deceit and absolute control is gaining ground via the information technology revolution. At the least expected moment in time, the Internet revolution will swing its pendulum of destruction upon those that manipulate human will for self interest.
Lesson Five: when the citizens succeed in rescuing their nations from the claws of oppressive regimes, the media and law enforcers controlled by the tyrants will swing to the side of the euphoric citizens.

Dan Stiller, of the Oxley District Traffic Branch.
Mr Atkinson said Sgt Stiller had been escorting a wide load when the crash occurred,
and his death was a great loss.
"Sergeant Stiller was a dedicated traffic officer committed to the safety and security
of all Queenslanders," he said in a statement.
The incident is being investigated by the Forensic Crash Unit and overviewed by the
Ethical Standards Command.
Sgt Stiller was sworn in as a Queensland police officer on January 30, 2002. He previously

WA: Diggers' day, as historians march for those who can't
By Cortlan Bennett and Lloyd Jones
PERTH, April 25 AAP - They march for those who are no more - but who will never be forgotten.
Western Australia's last World War I Digger, Peter Casserly, may have passed five years
ago, but he and his comrades are commemorated each year by a group of dedicated ex-servicemen
and military historians.
Replete in hand-stitched uniforms, Lee Enfield rifles and bayonets, members of the
West Australian Great War Living History Association marched in front of a record crowd
of 50,000 in Perth on Sunday.
With members representing all the WA units that served in the Great War - from the
revered 10th Light Horse Regiment, to the Flying Corp, Navy, infantry and Army Nurses
- they exemplified the Anzac spirit of mateship.
"With the diminishing number of World War I Diggers, we decided to set up a ceremonial
unit to commemorate them in marches like Anzac Day, because there was no-one else there
to march for them," association vice-president Michael Bell said after the city parade.
"Over the years, we've been asked to do renditions of other periods of Australian soldiery
in the 20th century, so now we've done everything from the Boer War to Vietnam.
"But normally on Anzac day it's the Great War."
About 6000 veterans, servicemen and support groups marched down St Georges Terrace
in the heart of Perth, following a record turnout at the city's dawn service in Kings
Park.
Event organisers said the perfect Autumn weather, as well as the current conflict Afghanistan
- in which Australian servicemen and women are still fighting - had drawn record crowds.
"Perth is amazing - we always have a large turnout here. But the weather has been magnificent,
so that's obviously brought even more people out today," one organiser said.
No incidents were reported by police, as cheering crowds lined the city, waving a sea
of Australian flags.
After the parade, commemorative service master of ceremonies and Returned Services
League WA president Bill Gaynor said Anzac Day was "not a celebration of war, but a commemoration
of the 110,000 Australian lives lost in conflicts" over the years.
"April 25th is not about military victory," he told the assembled crowd.
"As a people, we chose this day when war first scarred the conscience of a young nation.
"The loss of a generation of life was felt across the whole community - it was a tragedy
that we all associate with Anzac Day.
"It gives us, as a nation, the opportunity to think as individuals of those ordinary
Australians serving their nation.
"We think of those who served, and those who are currently serving.
"Above all, on Anzac Day, we honour those who died for us, for our nation, and for peace."
Earlier, in the south coastal city of Albany, thousands gathered for the Anzac Day dawn service.
The service had extra significance for the people of Albany because the city lays claim
to holding the first dawn service in Australia - on April 25, 1930.
Eighty years on, the service was held at the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial near the
top of Mount Clarence.
Master of ceremonies Ken Ewers-Verge told the crowd that some claimed the commemoration
of Anzac Day glorified war.
"But every veteran will be the first to say that their greatest wish and most fervent
prayer is that their children and this nation may never have to witness the horrors of
war again," he said.
After the laying of the wreaths under the Desert Corps statue of diggers and horses,
the crowd was asked to look out onto King George Sound where a flare went up to mark the
laying of a wreath upon the waters.
At the launch of an Anzac Peace Park on Albany's foreshore on Saturday, federal Immigration
Minister Chris Evans said the significance of Albany in the Anzac legend was not as widely
appreciated as it should be.
"It is the birthplace of the Anzac dawn service and it's fantastic to know that those
services occur throughout the world now with increased numbers of people participating,"
he said.
Albany RSL sub-branch president Laurie Fraser said the city was gearing up for major
events in 2014 and 2015 to commemorate 100 years since the departure of the first troop
convoy and the Gallipoli landings.
He said he expected thousands of visitors from around the world.
The convoy taking 30,000 Australian and New Zealand troops and 7500 horses to the war
left King George Sound in November 1914.
Some on board would die at Gallipoli, in France or the Middle East, making the Albany
departure their last sight of Australia.

FED: Scientists trace the link between gene and breast cancer
By Danny Rose, Medical Writer
SYDNEY, Aug 3 AAP - Australians scientists have have made a breakthrough in understanding
why women with a specific gene mutation are more likely to develop breast cancer.
Women with a gene named BRCA1 are known to have about a 65 per cent lifetime chance
of developing the cancer, and researchers at Melbourne's Walter and Eliza Hall Institute
have traced the cause to an unexpected source.
It had been thought the cancer risk was associated with stem cells specific to the
breast but instead the problem was found to be linked to the next phase - or "daughters"
- of these stem cells known as luminal progenitor cells.
"Our gene expression studies have revealed that BRCA1 breast tissue and basal breast
tumours are more similar to normal luminal progenitor cells than any other cell type in
the breast," Associate Professor Jane Visvader said.
"This places the spotlight on errant luminal progenitors, rather than breast stem cells."
The research, published in the international journal Nature Medicine, represents a
major shift in the way breast cancer is understood to develop and points to a new avenue
for targeted treatments.
The luminal progenitor cells in these women with the BRCA1 gene appear to have "forgotten"
how to behave, said Associate Professor Geoff Lindeman.
"Usually, luminal progenitor cells multiply rapidly in the presence of certain growth
factors," Dr Lindeman said.
"In BRCA1 women, these cells don't even require growth factors to proliferate - they
misbehave from the outset."
He said the BRCA1 gene was also used by the body for DNA repair and so there could
be a potential "triple-whammy effect" - faulty growth control, faulty DNA repair and expanding
luminal progenitor cell numbers - which ultimately results in breast cancer.
"Hopefully this will lead to new, tailored therapies for the next generation of women,"
Dr Lindeman said.

FED: Police powers bulked up in anticipation of torch protests=2
The declaration will cover the 20km relay route from the southern shore of Lake Burley
Griffin to Parliament House and along Commonwealth Avenue to Canberra's main business
precinct, Civic.
The bulked-up powers will be in place for eight hours on the day before the relay,
April 23, and for all of April 24.
Despite the chief minister saying the declaration would be in place for just one day,
a spokesman for Attorney-General Simon Corbell confirmed the it would apply for a pre-relay
briefing at the National Convention Centre for media and torchbearers on April 23.
Mr Stanhope said the extra powers were needed to deal with a potential clash between
pro-Chinese and pro-Tibetan demonstrators.
Thousands of Chinese Australians are planning to defend the Beijing torch in Canberra.
"It's in the context of a potential for a clash between two competing groups of demonstrators
or protesters that the police have asked for these additional powers," Mr Stanhope said.
Anyone entering the designated areas would be subject to enhanced powers, he said.
Mr Corbell said the powers were similar to those used for major sporting events in
Sydney or Melbourne.
ACT Policing was continuing to develop its plan for protecting the torch.
"I won't be disclosing the exact number of police, but it will be a very significant
police presence," Mr Corbell told ABC radio.

WA: Military commission not acceptable for Hicks, Beazley says
PERTH, April 13 AAP - The Australian government should demand David Hicks be put on
trial in a United States civil court now, says federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley.
Adelaide-born Hicks has been held by US authorities at Guantanamo Bay since he was
captured with Taliban forces in Afghanistan in late 2001.
He has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit war crimes, attempted
murder and aiding and abetting the enemy.
His military commission trial is currently on hold, pending the decision of a related
US Supreme Court matter involving another terrorist suspect.
Mr Beazley today said the federal government should be telling the US to try Hicks
in a civil court.
"The Australian government should ... say to the Americans, 'Look you have had him
now for four years, put him on trial in a US civil court now'," Mr Beazley told reporters
in Perth.
He said Labor had total confidence in US civil courts, but none for the military commission,
which Hicks is expected to face.
"A military commission is not acceptable, that is not the way America would try their
own citizens and we want the same justice for David Hicks that any American would get,"
he said.
Hicks, whose mother was born in the United Kingdom, has applied for British citizenship.
A UK appeals court overnight upheld a ruling against the British government's bid to
deny Hicks citizenship, increasing his chances of being freed from the US military prison.
Britain, unlike Australia, has successfully fought for the release of all its nationals
from Guantanamo Bay.

Fed: Centrelink staff unhappy with new rostering system
MELBOURNE, Dec 9 AAP - About 4,000 Centrelink call centre staff are holding lunchtime
meetings throughout Australia today in opposition to a new rostering system.
Centrelink has introduced a new computerised roster system, Total View, to replace
the previous system, Auto AP.
Workers lodge roster requests and expected workloads with the system which then provides
them with a four week roster.
The new rosters are expected to commence from Monday but many of the staff have had
unworkable rosters provided to them, the union said.
Community and Public Sector Union national president Mark Gepp said it has been "crazy".
"This new product has been a disaster," Mr Gepp said.
"Some employees have been rostered to work public holidays, weekends and have been
given two hour lunch breaks."
He said the 26 call centres throughout Australia were open only from Monday to Friday
between 8am and 5pm.
"The call centre employees are absolutely ropeable about it," he said.
Mr Gepp said members would call on management to immediately dismantle Total View and

People names are popular for dogs and cats too.(St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
Byline: Sara Casey Newman
In the dog and cat name game, Max and Tiger take the prize. That's according to a nationwide survey of 1,500 pet owners conducted earlier this year by The Iams Co.
However, when Veterinary Pet Insurance recently tallied up the pet names in its database of more than 220,000 policyholders, Max shared top honors with Mollie, not Tiger.
Blame the difference on different polling strategies. But credit them for a few other trendy tidbits.
For example, the Iams survey found that:
_Midwesterners are twice as likely as Northeasterners to name their dogs after foods or beverages.
_More than 70 percent of Southerners give their cats people names.
_Ginger, Gizmo, Buster and Lucy are popular for both dogs and cats in the Midwest but don't make it into the top 10 in any other region. Casey and Sasha are big in the Northeast; Rocky, Bandit, Cody, Dixie, Lucky and Sparky in the South; Rusty and Lady in the West.
_Midwesterners are less likely to name their pets after personality characteristics, such as Cuddles or Rascal, than are pet parents in the West and South.
_Kittens in the Midwest are much more likely to be named Fatty Lump, Tuna Breath or some other so-called silly name than their feline friends in the Northwest.
_Young Generation Y'ers are nearly four times more likely to pick a traditional name _ such as Kitty, Whiskers, Lucky or Spot _ than baby boomers are. The latter tend to opt for less-mainstream monikers, such as Kaleiducat, Beaker and Malibu.
_Brandy, Babe, Sara and Snuggles were popular dog names 10 years ago but are no longer on the top 10 list; Rocky and Belle have returned to the list after a 10-year absence.
_Similarly, Fluffy, Angel, Bobby and Lucky are back on the kitty top 10 after being out of favor for a decade, while former favorites Boots, Pepper, Samantha and Sparky have all been scratched.
_Max, Jake, Charlie and Princess have been consistent favorites for the past 10 years.
One thing many pet-name polls tend to agree on is the popularity of people names. Iams found that 74 percent of puppy owners and 66 percent of kitten owners chose people names for their pets this year. And according to Veterinary Pet Insurance, the penchant for people names has been on the increase for at least a decade _ evidence, perhaps, of our growing view of pets as members of our family.
According to Valerie DeMassa-Bruemmer, executive director of the St. Charles Humane Society, "some studies claim that if you choose a human name like Bonnie or Suzie, rather than some slang name, it actually helps strengthen your bond with that pet."
Whether we spend as much time pondering pet names as we do our children's names remains to be seen, but 84 percent of the pet owners surveyed by Iams said naming four-footed family members was easy. More than 60 percent of them said they chose a name the same day the newcomer arrived.
Such is not the case at animal shelters, where coming up with new names for the thousands of strays placed in adoption programs every year is an ongoing challenge.
"We try not to duplicate, but with the volume of animals we've had to name over the years, how could we not," said Claudia Shugert, executive director of the Animal Protective Association of Missouri.
The baby books that the APA staff resorts to "on occasion" are only one source of inspiration. As with baby names, help with picking pet names abounds.
A quick check of Amazon.com found more than a dozen pet-name books in print, some with unusual twists. The one offering astrological help _ "Pet Names, Pet Signs," by Karen Webster _ is out of print, but come December, "From Ace to Zummo," by Ellin Dodge, will provide some numerological guidance on the subject.
The Internet also offers innumerable animal-naming sites, many of them boasting their own pet-name popularity polls. For example,
http://www.ivillage.com/
serves up a generic top 50 list _ on which Max is fifth, by the way. Here, Rocky is first, followed by Amber, Jasper and Cinnamon.
Bowwow.com.au provides top 20 lists for dogs and for cats based on its pet-tag business.
Current top dogs on this tally are Max and Maggie; felines in first are Max and Sassy.
Bowwow.com.au also offers monthly suggestions for pet owners in search of more unusual monikers. Among the possibilities proffered in the past 12 months are Ricochet ("for the pet that bounces back"), Tommy Holedigger ("for the fashionable dog that likes to dig") and "Hecksma Kitty (as in "Where the heck's my kitty?").
Going for the popular names can have some disadvantages. DeMassa-Bruem mer suggested that too many Maxes might cause some confusion in obedience classes.
So could names that sound like commands, she said. Stacey sounds a lot like "Stay," Noah a lot like "No."
Then there's Spit, said Shugert, who knew of a pet with that name. Spit sounds too much like "Sit."
Shugert and DeMassa-Bruemmer both suggest getting to know your new pet before naming it.
This can lead to such names as Snuggles, Meowsy and Napster.
But when picking names based on personality or temperament, you have to be careful about the message you're sending about your pet or its breed, Shugert said. A puppy named Klutzie could cause people to assume a clumsiness that is no longer there once the dog is grown, she said, and giving a large dog a scary name can predispose people to fear it, even if he's a teddy bear at heart.
"Naming your Rottweiler Killer is not good for the dog and probably won't enhance your own reputation much either," she surmised.
Opposites _ a tiny Yorkie named Moose, for example _ can add "a comic element that can be appealing," Shugert continued, "but you also want to make sure you pick a name that ages well."
Take the APA's mascot dog, a little Pomeranian mix named Jaws. The moniker worked for many years, Shugert said, but it no longer quite fits their old and tooth-challenged friend.
Names that start out long often get shortened, and that also can ruin the original effect, Shugert said.
Short names _ only one or two syllables _ tend to be best. Pick a lilting one that still has "a natural rhythm for you even when you're yelling it at the top of your lungs," she advised. "No, Phoebe,
No!" rolls off the tongue easier than "No, Pheiddipides, No!"
That ill-advised moniker may not end up on your tabby's name tag, but it brings up one of the things Shugert loves about naming pets. "It provides a great opportunity to educate, especially if you have children." she said. "You can draw inspiration from history, mythology, music, geography _ all kinds of things. It's a wonderful opportunity for cultural investigation."
Inspiration can come from many other things as well: a pet's size, color, appearance or type (Tiny, Smoky, Tubby, Calico); a favorite food (Butterfinger, Cinnamon, KitKat); inanimate objects (Sneakers, Rocket, Socks); royalty (Duchess, Prince); Mother Nature (Snowflake, Timber, Summer, Star); holidays (Santa Claws, Firecracker); the entertainment world (Britney, Ringo, Rocky, Tweetie).
Hobbies and careers can spawn creativity, too, said Shugert, who knows a gardener who names all her felines after flowers and a doctor who calls his canine Band-Aid.
"I also know a woman who named her cat Sizzle, because she found it at a barbecue," Shugert said.
Even amid all the creativity and diversity, pet names tend to have at least one thing in common,
Shugert said. "Linguistic studies have shown that the majority of pet owners will ultimately pick a name or a nickname that will have an `e' sound at the end."
Just look at Jaws, she pointed out. "Most of the time we call him Jawsie."

SCIENCE-FICTION FANS HAVE PLENTY OF SITES TO SEE.(Entertainment)
Space is no longer the final frontier. Cyberspace has become virgin territory for Trekkies, X-philes and other sci-fi buffs to explore the worlds of fantasy and the unknown dreamed up by their favorite filmmakers and television series creators.
No Web site loves sci-fi more than The Sci-Fi Channel: Dominion, which pays homage to sci-fi classics of yesteryear like ``The Twilight Zone,'' as well as quirkier offerings like ``Mystery Science Theater 3000.'' The site is broken down into several areas including Pulp (with ``Pulp Fiction''-like ``The Plutonium Blonde,'' a sci-fi detective story), bulletin boards, links to Internet sci-fi societies and FreeZone, a multimedia gallery, which has video and audio clips from ``Dune,'' ``The Star Wars Trilogy,'' ``Lost in Space'' and other cult classics.
Address: http://www.scifi.com
A future candidate for the Sci-Fi Channel is likely to be ``The X-Files,'' Fox' highest-rated show, which has spawned a series of inferior imitators this season. Beware of imitators on the Web as well and go straight to the Official X-Files Page. The site contains information on the series' characters, episode guides, updates on the show and a Fan Forum, where regular viewers can discuss the adventures of Scully and Mulder in the message board or at the Internet Relay Channel chat area.
Address: http://www.thex-files.com
Sci-fi movies are also given their fair share of computer screen time. Time's 70 Years of Science Fiction travels from the '20s to the '90s (with reviews of Fritz Lang's nightmarish vision of the future - ``Metropolis'' - to Arnold Schwarzenegger's cartoonish ``Total Recall'') for a look at how sci-fi cinema has changed. (One can argue if that change is for the better.) To make the most of your Time travel adventure, a Shockwave plug-in is necessary to appreciate the special effects.

Psychotronic Cinema may lack the multimedia pageantry of Time's site, but if you're looking for a good sci-fi movie to rent, this site is an excellent resource. Essentially a sci-fi movie database, Psychotronic Cinema has a comprehensive alphabetical listing of just about any sci-fi movie ever made including classics (``2001,'' ``Forbidden Planet''), forgotten oldies (``Dr. Cyclops''), cult favorites (``Blade Runner'') and bizarre baddies (``The Brain That Wouldn't Die''). Don't leave without downloading some famous TV theme songs.

BLM ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF RECORD OF DECISION (ROD) FOR BLACKFOOT BRIDGE MINE.
POCATELLO, Idaho -- The following information was released by the Bureau of Land Management:
Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Pocatello Field Office issued a decision to approve the Blackfoot Bridge Mine and Reclamation Plan subject to environmental protection measures, mitigation, monitoring and conditions described in the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and in the Record of Decision (ROD). The BLM's decision also recommends issuing the proposed lease modifications to lease I-05613. The decision is consistent with the Preferred Alternative as described and analyzed in the FEIS.
Under the approved Plan, P4 Production, LLC, a subsidiary of Monsanto Company, would utilize open pit mining methods to extract ore from two undeveloped phosphate leases located about 10 miles northeast of Soda Springs. The Federal phosphate leases held by P4 grant them exclusive rights to develop phosphate minerals in the Blackfoot Bridge area.
The ROD is now available, and implementation of the decision may begin at the close of a 30-day appeal-filing period which began today (Friday, June 17, 2011). Copies of the Blackfoot Bridge Mine ROD are available at the BLM Pocatello Field Office, 4350 Cliffs Drive, Pocatello, Idaho. Electronic copies of the FEIS and ROD are available via Internet at http://www.blm.gov/id/st/en/prog/0.html. For more information, contact Kyle Free at the BLM, Pocatello Field Office at Kyle_Free@blm.gov or by calling (208) 478-6368.
The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.

Two thousand leopards: preparation pays off on a long-dreamed-of leopard hunt.(Travel narrative)
I'd shot more than 2,000 leopards in the recent past, but the one I was presently watching was about to escape. This particular leopard was in Mozambique. Specifically, it was in Simon Rodgers' (Safaris de Mozambique) Bawa Concession on the southwestern shores of Lake Cahora Bassa.
This was day nine of our hunt, and we'd all left camp just before 5 A.M. My PH, Greg Michelson, parked a mile or so from our bait tree. We left our crew, Obert, Rodgers, and Anibal, with the truck, and rode the rest of the way with my friends Bob Jensen and Jack Hodnik, and their PH, Bryn Jolliffe. It was still really dark when Bryn dropped Greg and me off at our trailhead, even though a sliver of a moon was showing low through the trees.
We could hear the sounds of bones snapping and the occasional grunt and growl even before we got into the blind, so we knew there was a leopard feeding on the bait this morning. We had slowly and quietly crept along the trail to the blind in our stocking feet, guided by Greg's barely visible toilet paper markers. Reaching the blind just before 6:00 A.M., all we could do was sit and listen as a leopard consumed the impala wired to the underside of a nearby tree branch.
While checking our baits yesterday morning, we'd found that a large male and a female had discovered this bait and consumed nearly all of it. We replenished the bait with another impala, my ninth, and built a blind. We had sat in this blind the previous evening until full dark, hearing baboons curse, guinea fowl chatter and flush, hornbills squawk, and vervet monkeys scream in the distance, but no leopards appeared.
Now, at 6:20 A.M., there was just a hint of light in the eastern sky. From 80 yards, the distance from our blind to the bait, we could barely make out the outline of the bait tree in the gloom of the predawn morning. Through binocular and riflescope, details slowly became clearer, but one of the unwelcome details confirmed that this leopard was leaving the bait and slowly making its way down the tree before we could identify its gender. Only males are legal game in Mozambique. It was heartbreaking to glimpse the cat leaving the bait just as it got light enough to see. What a bitter disappointment!
A True Friend
My friend Jack came over one snowy Alaskan afternoon the previous February and announced, "I inherited some money last fall, and I'm going to use it to take Bob Jensen (my next-door neighbor and another of Jack's long-time friends) on an elephant hunt. He's always wanted to hunt elephant. By the way, you're invited along to hunt that leopard you're always talking about. You'll have to pay for your own transportation over and back, but I'll pay for everything else. All you have to do is tell me your stories when you get back to camp each night."
Jack, an educator in Alaska's bush for many years, retired and moved to Haines after suffering a heart attack and stroke several years ago. His stroke left him unable to get around in the woods, so Bob Jensen and I were to "proxy hunt" for him on this safari. He planned to ride along and video whatever he could from the vehicles. Bob and I would then recount our experiences as we all sat around the evening campfires.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Bob Jensen and I both had reservations about this, for several reasons, but Jack eventually convinced us that we would be helping him fulfill his lifelong dream of going on an African safari. We both finally accepted Jack's invitation.
An Internet search led Jack and Bob to a crop-raider elephant hunt in Mozambique. The details of our combined elephant and leopard hunt were then arranged through Jeff Neal's Worldwide Hunts. Bob decided that he also wanted to hunt Cape buffalo, while my goals were leopard, impala, warthog, and bushbuck. Neither Jack nor Bob had been to Africa before. I had collected kudu, sable, gemsbok, zebra, steenbok, ostrich, and Cape buffalo on a hunt in Botswana in 1993, but leopards had eluded me. Jack was giving me the opportunity to try again.
Everything I'd read about leopard hunting led me to believe that Mr. Spots has a mysterious and disconcerting effect on people. Hunters who could normally hit running rabbits at 300 yards tended to panic and fire their rifles into the air when a leopard was their target. As soon as I realized that this leopard hunt was really going to happen, I decided to practice, and practice, and practice some more.
I fired more than a thousand rounds of ammunition at leopard and plains-game paper targets during semi-weekly trips to our local rifle range. In addition, I pinned two 8x10-inch leopard photos to my den wall, one quartering toward the viewer, one broadside. A camera tripod served as a rest for my rifle. Every evening, I carefully dry-fired fifteen or twenty times at one or the other of "my" leopards. Mentally coaching myself, I repeated over and over again: Pick a rosette ... hold your breath ... s-q-u-e-e-z-e the trigger ... follow through.
Over a period of four months I "shot" well over 2,000 leopards, and now the real thing was at hand. I was in Mozambique hunting real, live, flesh-and-blood leopards, and the first one I'd ever seen had just left the bait and climbed down out of the tree.
The Leopard Returns
For eight days Greg and I had driven up and down the primitive one-lane tracks that penetrate Simon Rodgers' million-acre concession. Some days Jack went with us, and other days he chose to go with Bob and Bryn. Rarely would the speedometer in Greg's Toyota Land Cruiser reach 25 kph (15 mph). Most of each day was spent checking our growing number of baits and then hunting for more impala to put up still more baits. Greg is extremely particular about leopard baits, which undoubtedly contributes to his 91 percent-plus career success ratio.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Each day the truck crawled up and down the steep banks of the myriad dry sandy riverbeds and over promontories pockmarked with rocks and huge boulders, and studded with caves and cliffs. The hilly mopane woodland habitat along the lakeshore was ideal for leopards. The suspense and anticipation grew stronger day by day. When would a shootable leopard be attracted to our baits?
Every day we'd see lots of other animals, and if we saw impala or something else on my trophy list, I'd jump out and grab the shooting sticks that Obert, Greg's head tracker, had waiting, and make a stalk. Often the animals would run, but occasionally curiosity would get the best of one, and my rifle would come up on the shooting sticks, a bullet would thread its way through the thornbush, scrub mopane, and tall grass, and another leopard bait or incidental trophy would be procured. One morning Jack was able to video the entire sequence as I spined a nice 21-inch impala ram.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Another morning we surprised a good-sized warthog that decided to run along the track instead of turning into the thick bush. Obert whistled and stopped him for a few seconds, but by the time I got out of the truck and set up on the shooting sticks, he was running again and just about to disappear over a small rise. All I had was a "going straight away" shot. I didn't hesitate, and rolled the warthog end over end in the middle of the track. He got up, limped off a few yards, and then went down for good.
On this ninth morning Jack was really excited about the possibility of videoing a leopard in the tree, but he finally decided to go with Bob and Bryn instead. He was concerned that he might spook the cat while trying to sneak into the blind with us in the darkness. I really wanted him to be in on the action, but in hindsight we both think he made the right decision.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
After the leopard left, Greg motioned me to sit back down and remain quiet. We sat there dejectedly for several minutes. Then, suddenly, we heard the unmistakable sounds of a leopard feeding again. As we looked cautiously, I saw that a leopard was back on the bait, but couldn't positively identify its gender. It fed for several minutes, changing positions occasionally, and finally turned so we could definitely see that it had male plumbing. He continued turning until he was standing broadside on the limb. Through the riflescope, he looked almost close enough to touch. What a fantastic sight!
"Shute the bawsterd," came Greg's English-accented whisper. All my practice paid off. The cross hairs came to rest on a prominent dark rosette behind the leopard's right shoulder. Half a breath ... hold it ... and the .300 Winchester Magnum went off almost by itself. I'd practiced the same scenario hundreds of times. As Yogi Berra once said, "It was deja vu all over again."
I lost sight of the leopard during recoil, but seconds after the shot, we heard a thud followed by a low grunt. Then, total silence.
"How did your sight picture look?" Greg whispered.
"Perfect!" I responded.
"Well," said Greg, "he ran off." I was stunned.
Greg said he would walk back and get the truck, "and my shotgun; then we'll go dig him out of the brush" and emphatically warned me to stay in the blind until he got back. I replayed the scene over and over in my mind. Everything had looked flawless, but I still spent the next thirty minutes worried sick that I had wounded this beautiful but very dangerous animal and now we were going to have to go into the thick brush after him.
Greg drove down a little side trail to within fifty yards of the bait tree. I heard the vehicle grinding closer and closer and then stopping. A truck door slammed. I heard Greg load his shotgun and cautiously start through the brush towards the tree. Then there was a pause before he shouted, "Bob! He's right here under the tree! He's dead! Way to go, buddy!"
A tidal wave of relief and euphoria swept over me. The trackers were ecstatic, and Greg was as pleased as he could be. Greg and his crew did a first-class job of putting me in position to take the leopard I'd dreamed of for more than fifteen years. They had all worked really hard for eight full days, and then allowed me to pull the trigger.
My leopard died instantly and fell out of the tree into a dry, sandy riverbed. There was no sign that he'd even twitched after he hit the ground. We surmised that it must have been the female that ran off after I shot. In any case, we would have an exciting story for Jack around the campfire tonight!
As we waited for the sun to come up enough to take pictures, Greg radioed Bryn, Bob, and Jack with the news of our successful leopard hunt.
During their conversation, Bryn told Greg that Bob had just shot an elephant, and Jack had been able to witness it all. They caught a small herd ravaging a village maize field, he said, and, "We took the herd's leader. She still had corn on her breath."
However, that's a story for another campfire.

Accounts receivable increased by $3.1 million quarter-over-quarter and increased by $3.0 million over the prior-year period to $16.4 million. Accounts payable increased by $3.7 million quarter-over-quarter and increased by $6.8 million over the prior-year period to $13.6 million. Capital expenditures were $699,000, up from $138,000 in the prior quarter and up from $396,000 in the prior-year period. Travelzoo exited the first quarter with $51.7 million in cash and cash equivalents.
State of Delaware Unclaimed Property Settlement
On April 21, 2011, Travelzoo entered into an agreement with the State of Delaware resolving all claims relating to a previously-announced unclaimed property review. The primary issue raised in the preliminary findings from the review, received by Travelzoo on April 12, 2011, concerned the shares of Travelzoo which have not been claimed by former shareholders of Travelzoo.com Corporation following a 2002 merger, as previously disclosed in the company's report on Form 10-K. In the preliminary findings under the unclaimed property review, up to 3.0 million shares were identified as "demandable" under Delaware escheat laws. While Travelzoo continues to take the position that such shares are issuable only to persons who establish their eligibility as shareholders, the company determined that it was in its best interest to promptly resolve all claims relating to the unclaimed property review. Travelzoo will make a one-time $20.0 million cash payment to the State of Delaware and is receiving a complete release of those claims. Travelzoo will provide the amount from cash on hand.
Non-GAAP Measures
To give an enhanced view of the company's operating performance, management has calculated, for this quarter, adjusted operating income, adjusted net income and adjusted diluted earnings per share by excluding the one-time expense related to the State of Delaware unclaimed property settlement. The company believes these metrics assist investors to assess certain business trends in the same way that these trends are analyzed by management. The discussion of adjusted operating income, adjusted net income, and adjusted diluted net income per diluted share are not in accordance with GAAP and may differ from non-GAAP methods of accounting and reporting used by other companies. Non-GAAP numbers are merely a supplement to, and not a replacement for, GAAP financial measures. As the only difference between GAAP and non-GAAP measures is the one-time expense related to the State of Delaware settlement, today's reporting should not be viewed as the company's intention to report non-GAAP measures in future periods. Refer to the "Reconciliation of GAAP EPS to non-GAAP EPS" section of this release for a discussion of these non-GAAP measures and their reconciliation to the reported GAAP measures.
